WEEKLY ACTIVITIES OF KMAG CO, USAFIK Chief KMAG 31 May 1949 MSW:oy 319.1 1. a. CO, KA and party made detailed study of tactical disposition of units in 1st and 7th Divs, ref defense of 38th parallel. During first week of June a similar study will be made of 6th Div; will complete an on-the-ground inspn of all units along parallel. b. On 29 May at Seoul Grounds, KA conducted a demonstration and a display of equipment. Included the following: Inf Flat drill Inf small unit tactics Gun drill of Inf crew-served wpns Gun drill of 105mm howitzer Construction of wooden bridge, 30' long, 6 minutes Laying a double apron barbed wire fence Cavalry demonstration by KA Cav units Demonstration was well-rehearsed and reflected great improvement in the general trng of KA units. Approximately 30,000 Korean civilians witnessed demonstrations. c. 29 May, 1500 Cadets of 8th-9th KMA classes graduated as 2nd Lts, KA. After 10 day leave, will report for duty to various Fld Divs and Sp Trps. d. 24 May, 20 student nurses graduated from Nurses School, Kimpo. Will be assigned with KA hospitals. 2. Nine American Officer students of the Language and Area Course visited Korea for one week. During visit, they were given six hours of orientation on KA, which included a one-hour round table discussion which generated into an additional hour during meal entertainment. They were accompanied on a two-hour tour of 9th Regt installation 26 May, and a two-hour visit to Seoul Air Strip 28 May. 3. Advisor, Reserve, accompanied by members of the Reserve Staff, inspected Res units in the Kangwondo province during period 17-24 May. It was found that the units were excellent in spirit and in satisfactory state of training. Because of lack of weapons and trained KA RA personnel, Res units are not receiving the latest in tactical trends. Detailed report submitted to Chief KMAG. 4. G-1: US Off personnel: Total 150, 35 Gains, 5 Losses. US Enl personnel: Total 304, 152 Gains, 11 Losses. US Civ personnel: Total 11, no gains or losses. Latest figures on Residents, KA, as follows: Arrested 1-21 March, original list, 124 Off; 81 EM Not Arrested 1-21 March, original list, 50 99 Arrested 1 Mar-25 May, 224 1460 Released; under surveillance, 19 4 Under surveillance pending arrest, 127 714 . 6. G-3: a. Opns: 8th Regt now stationed at Wonju; has been reconstituted and has its 3 normal Bns. 7th Regt, previously stationed at Chongju, moved to Chunchon; assumed responsibility formerly asgd 8th Regt. 6th Div Special Guerrilla Bn, which was attchd 2nd Regt Cheju Do, has returned to mainland and is stationed at Kwangju. Training: Trig inspes of 1st, 2nd and 7th Divs completed. Trng inspu team currently inspecting 3rd Div and 5th Div. c. KA currently conducting series of tests to determine the KA Officers who will attend service schools in the US. 19 have been requested by the Govt of the Republic of Korea. 7. G-4: During this period, G-4 has been engaged in property transactions resulting in the withdrawal of US troops. Property involved includes real property, installed property, and other properties such as Army cots, mattresses, et cetera.
