Restricted 3191 WEEKLY ACTIVITIES OF KMAG CG, USAFIK Chief, KMAG 7 March 1949 JHH:oo 1. New Regimental T/O completed and distributed to Regt. 2. Korean Correspondence Course Sec now sending to field an average of one course per week. Courses include such subjects as Organization of DND, Organization of the Korean Army, General Principles of Rifle Company in Attack, and problems of rifle company in attack. 3. 7 Mar 1949 Sig School, Yong Dong Po, graduates 400 Sig personnel. 4. 2 Mar, 221 Special Cadets graduated KMA. 5. Advisor, KA, 2 Mar, delivered speech to UNCOK, subject "The Korean Army". 3 Mar, UNCOK inspected KMA. 7 Mar UNCOK will be conducted on tour of various units of KA. 6. 8th Class, KMA, scheduled to graduate last week in April. 9th KMA Class scheduled to graduate last week July. These two classes will increase KA strength of Officers by approx 1600. 7. On-job-tng with Hq 5th Inf small unit tactical demonstrations by units of 5th Inf, and lectures on Gen Staff functions by Gen Staff members of USAFIK for selected personnel of KA continues with highly commendable results. Trng conducted by US Army personnel is well-planned and coordinated. Korean personnel are highly interested and attentive to instruction. 8. Dissidents: a. Amnesty program now in progress approx 3 months, carried on in Chung Chong Namdo and the Cholla Dos reports following results: SKLF 4500; Rebels 51; Guerrillas 1664. b. Summary of dissidents in KA: Off EM Apprehended 1 Nov 48 - 20 Feb 49 126 1170 Apprehended 20 Feb 49 - 5 Mar 49 87 90 Unapprehended 25 51 Restricted DECLASSIFIED Authority NND 020855 Restricted SUBJ: Wkly Activities of KMAG JHH:ee 7 Mar 49 5b continued: Comments: Incomplete reports indicate some Off and EM on current pick-up list were killed in action while fighting for Korean Army in incidents since 19 Oct 48. 9. Operations: a. 38th parallel: There were 8 minor incidents during period. No KA casualties reported. b. Honam: Brig Gen Chung, Dep C/S, KA, heading a picked staff of qualified Officers, has arrived Namwon. This command group will plan an all-out operation to reduce guerrilla forces in ChiriSan area. Opns scheduled to terminate 31 Mar. Results of opns: KA, Killed 2; Wounded 6. Guerrillas, Killed 47. c. Cheju do: Similar to command group sent to Honam, group of Officers headed by Lt Col Yu, KMA, dispatched to Cheju to step up opns there. 31 Mar also date of opns termination. Units on Cheju now operating in mountains. Latest reports show out of 6 engagements the following results: Guerrillas Killed and Wounded, 57; KA, no casualties reported. 10. KA Strength: 2641 Off; 61,173 EM; 1612 Cadets; 4,384 ROT; Total, 69,810 Reserve Corps Strength: 11,654. 11. Korean Navy a. During week, KN vessels patrolled fol areas: Mukho, Pohong, Yosu and entire coastline of Cheju. No illegal vessels reported. b. Because of seriously damaged hull of YMS #511, engines and deck equipment being salvaged and investigation of accident is pending. 12. Dissidents (Korean Navy) - 35 court-martialed; 1 Petty Off executed in Chinhae by Order of Pres; balance sentenced to terms ranging from 6 mos to 10 yrs. 2 Restricted DECLASSIFIED Authority NND 020855
