WEEKLY ACTIVITIES OF KMAG CG, USAFIK Chief, KMAG 14 Mar 1949 JHH:mcd 1. 11 March, 91 interpreters sworn in. This constitutes the beginning of the Korean Interpreters Corps - established for the purpose of furnishing the American Advisors a qualified interpreter. 2. Two (2) I & E schools, sponsored and conducted by 2nd Regt, Cheju Do have been established. These schools will orient the populace on democracy and the evils and deceit of communism. 3. Current plans completed for establishment of a permanent Military Police School on or about 1 April 1949. 4. 7 March UNCOK was conducted on a tour of KA Cannon and AT School and the Korean Military Academy. 5. Dissidents: a. Amnesty program in Henam reports following results for period 25 Feb - 4 Mar: 1265 Civilians and 1 KA deserter. This brings the total surrendered to 7481. b. Summary of dissidents in KA: Off EM Apprehended 1 Nov 48 - 20 Feb 49 126 1170 Apprehended 20 Feb 49 - 5 Mar 49 87 90 Apprehended 5 Mar 49 - 12 Mar 49 1 1 Unapprehended 24 50 Note: It is felt that the unapprehended figure will not change greatly. This is due to many reasons - some of which are: (1) some Off and EM on the dissident list are showing up as having been KIA against the rebels (2) other, over a long period of time have proven loyal to the KA. 6. Operations: a. 38th parallel: Minor incident during period. KA suffered 1 EM WIA and 1 EM MIA. North Korea casualties, 1 WIA. Reserve Corps: 2nd Recruiting phase to go into effect 20 Mar. New Regts to be formed in Kwangju, Yosu, Masan and Pusan. Auth strength of 150 will be carefully screened. Current Reserve strength: 11,719. 9. Korean Navy: a. Patrol ships during period contacted 21 vessels, of these, in the vicinity of Mukho, one (1) was found to be a smuggler. The vessel and crew was turned over to Customs at Mukho. 10. Vehicle maintenance - setting up repair shop at Gambie Do Island for repair and storage of vehicles not in use. 11. Finance: Preliminary investigation shows that ordinary expenditures for the Navy for fiscal year 48-49 was approximately 500,000,000 yen. This is well within the limitations set by SKIG Budget of last year. 12. KN Strength: 397 Off; 139 Naval Cadets; 3371 EM; total 3957. Also employed by the Navy 404 civilians mostly artisans, such as machinists and shipwrighters working at the Naval shipyard at Chinhae. 2 DECLASSIFIED Authority NND 020855 SUBJ: Wkly Activities of KMAG JHH:mcd 14 Mar 49 Sb continued: During the past month a total of 2403 applications were made for enlistment in the Navy, of these only 1116 passed the required mental and physical examinations. These will be sworn into the service 25 Mar 49 and sent to Chinhae for recruit training. Applications are still being received and the next examination for enlistment will be held June 1949.
