CIVIL UNREST Constabulary Mutiny In TAEGU (1150-1430) At approximately 021200 November the Commanding Officer of the Military Police of the 6th Constabulary Regiment was killed by a Constabularyman who was being investigated by the MP Officer for communist activities. Taking advantage of this incident an estimated 200 members of the 6th Regiment, stationed at a rifle range southwest of Camp Skipworth outside TAEGU, mutinied. (A-2) Approximately 30 constabulary MP's were dispatched to the area and engaged the mutineers in a firefight which lasted until approximately 021430 November. At this time approximately 75 of the mutineers loaded in 4 jeeps, 3 2½ ton trucks and 1 3/4 ton truck and departed from the camp. One truck load of this group was later captured. (B-3). TAEGU police were alerted and 100 policemen were deployed to keep the revolting troops out of TAEGU. (A-2) At 021735 November 40 to 50 of the mutineers commandeered a train, consisting of an engine and 1 coach, in TAEGU and started northwest toward KUMCHON (1110-1467). The station master at SINDONG (1147-1450), 12 miles northwest of TAEGU, reported that this train arrived in SINDONG at 021800 November and 30 to 40 men jumped off the train and ran to the hills. (B-2) During the afternoon of 02 November 92 of the mutineers surrendered to the Commanding Officer of the 1st Infantry. All these men were armed. They also surrendered 5 trucks and 1 ambulance which they had in their possession. Interrogation of these prisoners revealed that they had intended to attack police boxes on 03 November but that the riot had precipitated prematurely. (A-2) By 021700 the 1st Infantry Regiment had approximately 280 disloyal constabulary prisoners under guard at TAEGU. During the morning of 03 November approximately 20 mutineers were fighting policemen at a fabric factory in TAEGU. (B-3) Approximately 1 mile south of KUMCHON (1110-1467), 70 mutineers were reported surrounded by 20 policemen and 200 loyal constabularyman from KUMCHON during the morning of 03 November. Fighting is still in progress in that area. (B-3) COMMENT: These mutineers are probably the group which jumped off the commandeered train at SINDONG at 021800 November. The total casualties reported are 4 policemen killed, 10 civilians killed by stray shots and 10 policemen wounded. (B-3) An additional 10 mutineers, including 2 officers, have been apprehended.
