G-2 PERIODIC REPORT From: 130800/I May 48 To : 140800/I May 48 Headquarters, USAFIK Seoul, Korea 1000/I 14 May 1948 No. 834 Confidential MAPS: KOREA, 1/250|000 Eastern ASIA, 1/1,000,000 1. ARMED FORCES U.S. Patrol Ambushed . A U.S. patrol, consisting of one officer, one non-commissioned officer and an interpreter, while investigating a report received in YONAN (910- 1680) of an impending invasion by the North Korean Constabulary, was ambushed approximately 2,000 yards south of the 38th parallel at about (915-1695) at 140200 May. The ambushers fired 30 rounds of small arms ammunition and threw four grenades at the patrol, one of which wounded the non-commissioned officer in the face. The patrol returned to YONAN, abandoning the jeep, two carbines and a pair of field glasses. A later patrol recovered only the vehicle. (7th Div Flash Rpt. B-2) COMMENT: There is no evidence which indicates whether the ambushers knew they were attacking a U.S. patrol or if the attack was a case of mistaken identity, nor is it known whether the attackers were North or South Koreans. 2. POLITICAL ACTIVITIES Negative 3. CIVIL UNREST a. Homemade Bombs Thrown in SEOUL (1) At approximately 132150 May a homemade bomb was thrown at a XXIV Corps bus in the vicinity of the TOYOD Hotel in SEOUL. No injuries nor damage to the bus resulted. (CIC Flash Rpt. B-2) (2) At 132130 a homemade bomb was thrown at the MARO district, SEOUL, police station. No damage resulted. (7th Div Flash Rpt. C-2) (3) At 132100 a bomb, made from a beer can and carbide, was thrown at the home of the vice-chairman of the Peace Preservation Corps in HYO JA DONG, SEOUL. No apparent damage resulted. (CIC Flash Rpt. B-2) (4) At 122140 May a homemade bomb was thrown at police station No. 10, CHUNG NO district in SEOUL. A policeman threw the grenade into the street where it exploded. Rioters Continue Action on CHEJU-DO (1) A mob, estimated at 300, attacked the police in HAMKI RI (940-1148) on 12 May. Some of the raiders were armed with U. S. carbines. The police repulsed the attack, killing two of the raiders. (MG Report. B-2) (2) A large mob attacked the town of HALLIM (934-1138) at 102330 May but were driven off by combined police and constabulary action. 25 raiders, armed with spears and swords, were captured. (MG Report. B-2) (3) At 111600 May, two policemen were kidnapped by raiders in the vicinity of HAMBOK (940-1144) and taken into the hills. (MG Report. B-2) (4) At 121600 May a mob of 30 raided the village of KAN CON DONG (931-1124). One civilian was killed before the mob fled upon the arrival of a squad of the Constabulary. (MG Report. B-2) (5) At 120100 May 80 rioters attacked the police sub-station at SEHWA (935-1133). (MG Report. B-2) (6) The police and Constabulary report that in JONG DONG NI, KUJWA Myun (978-1147) 45 raids were made by the communists during the period 10 May to 12 May inclusive. Two DAI DONG YOUTH were killed and five homes were destroyed by fire. (MG Police Rpt.) c. Constabulary Rounds Up Rioters on CHEJU-DO On 12 May, the Constabulary raided a village at (943-1144) and arrested 25 communists armed with spears. In a raid on another village, at (954-1145), the constabulary took 193 prisoners. One of these prisoners agreed to take the Constabulary to guerrilla headquarters, the remainder are being held for questioning. (6th Div Flash Rpt. B-2) d. Rival Rightist Parties Fight in KYONGSANG-NAMDO A crowd of approximately 200 gathered in front of the fire station in CHINHAE (1160-1350) at 131630 May. The crowd was composed of DAI DONG YOUTH and NATIONAL SOCIETY for the ACCELERATION OF KOREAN INDEPENDENCE members. A fight between the two parties members followed and several people were injured before the police intervened. Later the leader of NSAKI reported to the CHINHAE Provost Marshal that the DAI DONG members intended to set fire to the local fire station. At 132100 May a group of 1000-1500 returned to the fire station but an American officer talked them out of any violence. Two DAI DONG members and one fireman were injured. After the crowd dispersed several members of the DAI DONG bombed the home of the Assistant Fire Chief, breaking several windows. (6th Div Flash Rpt. Post-Election Violence in KYONGSANG-PUKTO (1) At 121000 May the myun chief was stabbed to death near DONG CHONG, two miles southwest of TAEGU. (CIC Flash Rpt.
