PROVISIONAL MILITARY ADVISORY GROUP ADVISOR 9th REGIMENT K.C. CHEJU DO. 30 October 1948. SUBJECT: Summary Of The Situation On Cheju Do. TO : See Distribution. Reference: Map Scale: 1:250,000 At 0500 hrs 28 October about 50 raiders attacked the police box at Samyang-Ni, map ref: 958-1153. The attack started with a Jap hand grenade being thrown into the enclosure resulting in one policeman being killed and two wounded. In the fire fight that followed one other policeman was killed and three more were wounded. When re-enforcements from Cheju City [illegible] on their way out to help they were ambushed by a road block and another policeman was killed. The police killed three of the raiders whose bodies I saw. They captured two Jap 99s, three Jap type helmets, and two hand grenades. The night of the 28th fourteen stone road blocks were put up between Cheju City and Samyang-Ni. During the night of the 28th Major Song the Regimental Commander had seventeen EM of the 1st Bn arrested as members of a red cell within the regiment. He discovered it first when he picked up his phone at his quarters to call the MP station on some business and overheard a conversation taking place between two of the men involved. They had tapped the line to Headquarters in order to listen in then pass the information on to other cell members. The topic of their discussion was shooting the regimental commander then taking over. They were fairly smart in tapping the line but foolish in discussing their plans over the phone [illegible] [illegible]. Major Song executed six of the leaders last night. I believe that the above incident could have been responsible for the army being able to surprise the group of rebels at Changion-Ni inasmuch as they did not receive or apparently did not rec eive information on the movement of army units in that area. (1) DECLASSIFIED Authority NND 620855 As I told you in my previous report the regiment has been operating patrols in different locations around the island. At 1400 hrs the 29th the units operating in the vicinity of Changion-Ni, ref: map 1:250,000 937-1144 ran into a meeting the rebels were holding. There were about 200 in the group and an eight hour pitch battle took place in which the patrol accounted for about 100 of the group the others escaped. [illegible] They also captured someequipment such as ammo, blankets, Jap sword, belts, weapons, raincoats, and a pair of field glasses. All activity here has been in the form of nuisance raids and have been conducted against the army and police. None of the population have been molested like they were in May. It looks as if their strategy is to harass the police and army so as to get them to dissipate forces in numerous piece meal attacks or small scattered defensive units which could be surrounded and defeated in detail. That part I believe has failed inasmuch as the army has maintained a systematic system of patrols and adequate reserves alerted for immediate movement to area where large concentrations are known or believed to be. The police and the army here are operating very smoothly together. They maintain constant liaison and each responds rapidly to any request for assistance from the other.
