1. ARMED FORCES
a. North Korean Constabularymen or Soviets Attack Police
Box
At 280100 May 70 North Korean Constabularymen or
Soviets attacked a police box at CHANG NI (1157.7-1696.5) with rifles and machine guns. One South Korean policeman was wounded and one South Korean police sergeant is reported missing. The South Korean police sent 99 men as reinforcements and a U.S. combat patrol was dispatched from OP #25

COMMENT: It is considered improbable that Soviet troops were involved.
b. Police Box Attacked by North Korean Constabularymen
At 262245 May approximately 40 North Korean Constabularymen attacked the police box at CHUNG KOK (917.9-1696.4).
20 South Korean policemen were engaged and reinforcements were called from YONAN (910-1680). No report has been received as to the result of this attack. (CIC P/R #126. Police

2. POLITICAL ACTIVITIES
a. Communists Arrested Within Police Department of
KYONGSANG-PUKTO
The South Korean police have arrested 21 KYONGSANGPUKTO policemen who have been active in communist cells within the police force. Since their organization in 1947 these cells have successfully stolen three carbines and two pistols, confiscated police codes and given important information of police strengths and activities to the SOUTH KOREA
LABOR PARTY. (CIC S/I, 25 May. A-1)
b. Youth Party to Form National Defense Army
The YONG SAN district, SEOUL, branch of the GENERAL
ALLIANCE of KOREAN YOUNG MEN have decided to form a national defense army composed of all party members between the ages of 18 to 25. This group is to be formed to combat riots because it is felt that the Korean Constabulary is not able to cope with the situation. (CIC P/R #126. F-3)
3. CIVIL UNREST
a. Terrorism in KYONGSANG-PUKTO
(1) At 250525 May the home of the vice-chief of the police Information Section in TAEGU was bombed with two home made grenades. One policeman was wounded. (Police Report)

(2) At 242045 May the home of a former election
committeeman in TAEGU was bombed. The committeeman's mother was killed and another member of the family was injured.

b. Communist Killed in KYONGSANG-PUKTO
A communist, arrested in TAL SUNG Gun (1155-1425) for being implicated in the October 1946 riots and the attempted riot on 01 May 1948, was killed as he attempted to escape the police while leading them to an alleged arms cache.

c. Policeman Attacked in KYONGGI-DO
While taking a suspect to the INCHON (965-1630)
police station, a policeman was attacked from the rear by four assailants armed with knives. The policeman suffered five knife wounds and the attackers escaped. (CIC Flash

d. Communications Severed on CHEJU-DO (Delayed Report)
During the night of 20 May telephone lines were cut in the village of WIMI (964-1123). No attempt to raid the village was made after the communications had been severed.

e. Communist Wounded in CHUNGCHONG-PUKTO
LEE Myung Co, a member of the KOREAN DEMOCRATIC
PATRIOTIC YOUNG MEN'S ASSOCIATION who had in his possession a Japanese pistol, 40 rounds of ammunition and a U.S. hand grenade, and three followers were arrested on 24 May in
CHONGJU (1050-1530). In attempting to escape from the police

f. Communist Plan Attacks in KANGWON-DO
The communists plan of attack in KANGNUNG (1180-1660)
is to initially attack small police boxes and rightists homes in the suburbs, thus drawing the KANGNUNG police out of town and allowing the main body of communists to attack the town with little opposition. (CIC P/R #126. C-6)

A U.S. carbine, lost when a U.S. patrol was ambushed near the 38th parallel (915-1695) on 14 May (See P/R #834), was recovered following the attack by North Korean Constabularymen on the police box at the YESONG River (941.8-1693.9)
