U.N. Commission Recognizes National Assembly
In a reply to Dr. RHEE's letter of 11 June, which formally notified the UN Commission of the establishment of a Korean National Assembly, the
Commission belatedly recognized the elected group as a National Assembly in a letter of 28 June which stated that the UN Commission noted the fact that a National Assembly had been constituted on 31 May 1948 by the elected representatives of the Korean people and expressed the hope that these representatives would seek to promote early attainment of the independence and unification of Korea.
The UN Commission, in its letter, reiterated that it was now available for such consultation as the elected representatives may request.
COMMENT: The use of the term "National Assembly" in their letter is the first positive action by the UN Commission toward recognizing the Assembly as "national."
