From: 1800I 26 Sept 47 To : 1800I 27 Sept 47 G-2 PERIODIC REPORT HQ 6TH INF DIV Pusan, Korea 1900I 27 September 1947 No, 709. MAPS: KOREA, 1/250,000. 1. Non-Operational Intelligence. None reported. 2. Counterintelligence. Subversive Activity. a. Terrorism. (1) PAKKOORI (990 - 1430).- At 1100, 25 September 47, a CHONJU (1015 - 1432) sub-detachment Agent arrested KIM, Chun Soo, the chairman of the Young Men's group of the "Society for the Acceleration of Korean Independence" in PAKKOORI, on the charge of terrorism in connection with the collection of contributions from the people in that area. Investigation continues. (2) CHOPO Myen (1015 - 1435)(not on map) - On 25 September 47, CHONJU (1015 - 1432) CIC sub-detachment obtained a petition signed by the village people of CHOPO Myon. The petition asked for CIC aid in regards to the activities of the Rightist "Society for the Acceleration of Korean Independence" in that area. The petition stated that recently the organization started a drive to collect 350,000 yen and that those people who would not give money willingly had been beaten by members of the Rightist parties. An investigation is being conducted by CIC. (3) On 25 September 47, KUNSAN (972 - 1450) police reported the follow- ing: The Korean advisor to the Provincial police, PAK, Chul, the Provincial Governor and Colonel [illegible], CO of the 96th MG, have ordered the police to formally disband all officers of the "Justice Party" in Cholla-North Province, and not to allow the members of this organization to join any other political party. The reason for this action is that the "Justice Party" has been involved in terroristic activities and have forced contributions from Koreans in Cholla-North Province. They were outlawed by a decree of the "South Korean Interim Government" in SEOUL. (4) PUSAN - Extract from PUSAN CIC Report #390, 27 September 47: "Positive information has been received by this office (CIC) that the DAE HAN NO CHUNG ('Great Korea Labor Union') is extorting money from innocent people. Their tactics are to enter a shop and request money in the name of their party. If they are refused, threats of violence are made and usually carried out. Also the term 'Communist' is applied to every reluctant shop owner. At present money is very short and shop owners have to close up their shops, and they will not open until the DAE HAN NO CHUNG leaves town." (Ref Par 3a(1) of G-2 Report #707, 25 September 47) b. Illegal Activity of a Subversive Nature. PUKPYONG-NI (1127 - 1344) - A patrol from the 53rd FA Bn reported that posters had appeared in the PUKPYONG-NI area on 26 September 47 denouncing the Provincial Korean Government. DECLASSIFIED Authority NND745070 Confidential (over) 1196 Confidential 3. Civil Relations. a. General Conditions. (1) PAEDUN-NI (1136 - 1339) - On 26 September 47 a 53rd FA Bn patr[ol] reported that the people in the area north and northeast of PAEDUN-NI expect a good rice crop; estimates are being taken for the amounts for the collection and the people dislike this. (2) CHINYONG-NI (4132 - 1370) - Additional information on incident of 26 September 47 (Ref Par 3a(1) of G-2 Report #708, 26 September 47): The people marching to and from the meeting were the local "Kwang Bok Young Men's Association" members. A patrol to the area reported that the police give no cooperation to the military at all. When the officer in charge of the U. S. patrol asked to see the Chief of Police, he was told that the Chief of Police was out on a patrol, but the Chief of Police entered without a hat on and it was evident that he had not left the station. The officer asked the Chief if there had been crowds marching on 26 September 47 and the Chief stated that there had not been. The officer then told the Chief that the U. S. patrol had knowledge of the crowds in that city on 26 September 47. The Chief of Police then admitted that there had been such activities in CHINYONG-NI. The Rightist police naturally are sympathetic to Rightist demonstrations, and in this area are evidently "covering up" for the Rightists. b. Civil Disturbances by Province. (1) Kyongsang-South: KURA-DONG (1078 - 1401) - HAMYANG (1072 - 1395) police reported to a patrol from the 53rd FA Bn that on 26 September 47 in KURA-DONG Leftists were having an illegal meeting and several Rightists attempted to arrest four of the Leftists and turn them over to the police. Two Leftists escaped and returned with approximately 200 Leftist reinforcements. A disturbance resulted in which three Rightists were injured and their homes destroyed. The Leftists fled to the mountains upon the arrival of the police; no Rightists were arrested. (2) CHEJU-DO: (EXTRACT: XXIV Corps G-2 Periodic Report #641, 24 September 47): "500 Students Attack Middle School - Approximately 500 students of the CHEJU Agricultural School demolished a building of the CHEJU Boy's Middle School on 15 September 47 because the middle school students were classified by the other students as 'pro-Japanese'. The destroyed building was a Japanese built structure which housed classrooms." 4. Summary of Intelligence in Adjacent Areas. None Reported. 5. Miscellaneous. a. PUSAN - On 27 September 47 a Provost Court sentenced the Korean, who threw the rock at the MP during the 16 September 47 disturbance in PUSAN (Ref Par 3a of G-2 Report #698, 16 September 47), to one year in jail and 15,000 yen fine. b. YUGANG-NI (994 - 1441)(not on map) - At 1400, 25 September 47, an L-5 U.S. plane, (#4417757), was forced down on a road near YUGANG-NI. The plane was piloted by 1st Lt J. W. THOMPSON, 0-2095319 of the XXIV Corps Air and Ground Liaison Section. The plane was on a scheduled flight from DECLASSIFIED Authority NND745070 Confidential (cont'd) Confidential KUNSAN (972 - 1450) to CHONJU (1015 - 1432) and was forced to land; no passengers were aboard and no one was injured. A preliminary inspection by a mechanic from Camp HILLENYER revealed that a defective carborator was the source of trouble. Agents of the CHONJU CIC obtained pictures of the plane's instrument readings. The L-5 was repaired and returned to its base.
