Kyongsang-South: (1) TANGYE-RI (1101 - 1378) - Delayed report: On the night of 15 August 47, a fight started between 500 Leftist, "Farmer's Association" members and a smaller number of Rightists. Three Rightists were injured. No additional data is available at close of period. (2) PUSAN - There are two stevedore companies working on pier #4, the "Speed Company" and the "New Korea Company". Each company works one-half of the pier. At approximately 0700, 21 August 47, a U. S. sentry saw a stevedore from the "Speed Company" hanging around a warehouse stored with medical supplies on the "New Korea Company" side of the pier. The sentry told the stevedore to return to his side of the pier. The stevedore did not obey so the sentry put his hand on the laborer's shoulder. The stevedore resisted and yelled that he was being attacked. Another stevedore from the "Speed Company" came up and hit the U. S. sentry. The sentry in return struck this stevedore. A large crowd of stevedores gathered and moved to the "New Korea Company" side of the pier. The crowd armed with poles, and sticks, etc., moved towards the pier office near the gate. The officer in charge of the pier had 30 of his U. S. sentries, armed with rifles, and five Constabulary drive the "Speed Company" stevedores back to their side of the pier. The "Speed Company" stevedores threatened death to the "New Korea Company" workers if they continued to work. The "New Korea Company" laborers claimed they were too frightened to work so the officer sent them off the pier. On the "Speed Company" side of the pier, the stevedores were searched and quietly run off the pier. The officer in charge of the Pier stated that in his opinion the "Speed Company" stevedores employed at lower wages than the "New Korea Company" stevedores seized the incident as an excuse to demand and demonstrate for higher pay. By 1015, 21 August 47 the pier had been cleared of all stevedores and the situation was quiet. b.
