1947. 06. 14. 제6보병사단 정보참모부 정기보고* [illegible signature] PERIODICAL REPORT From: 1800I 13 Jun 47 To : 1800I 14 Jun 47 HQ 6TH INF DIV Pusan, Korea 1500I 14 June 1947 No. 604. MAPS: KOREA, 1/250,000. 1. Non-Operational Intelligence. None reported. 2. Counterintelligence. Subversive Activity. Terrorism. In PUSAN at 0800, 14 June 47, the Chief of the Central Police Station, Captain KWAN, Wee Sang, was murdered by an unidentified assassin in front of his home just after he entered a police car (U.S. army ambulance) to go to his office. The assassin, who was standing near the police car fired two rounds from an automatic pistol, similar to a Smith and Wesson. Both rounds hit Captain KWAN who was sitting next to the driver in the cab of the ambulance. One went through his right arm and lodged in his chin, and the other went through his right arm and lodged in his chest. Captain KWAN died immediately. The assassin wore a Jap summer army uniform and was about 5 feet 4 inches in height. One detective and the driver of the ambulance were with Captain KWAN. The detective who was in the back was prevented from taking any action by the construction of the ambulance. The driver dismounted and fired two rounds at the fleeing assassin who escaped. KWAN has received many threatening letters from Leftist elements during the past few months, and it is believed that the assassin was a Leftist and probably a member of the outlawed "Democratic Young Men's association". At 2100, 13 June PUSAN Police arrested 30 members of the "Democratic Young Men's Association" for holding an illegal meeting to plan attacks on Rightists; at 0300, 14 June all 30 were released. Captain KWAN had been active in rounding up Leftist strike agitators during the recent dock workers' strike in PUSAN. KWAN was also hated by the Leftists because he had been in charge of the police detail on 1 March 47 when the police fired into a crowd of 8,000 in PUSAN killing five Leftists. 3. Civil Relations. Civil Disturbances by Province. a. Kyongsang-South: 2nd Bn, 1st Inf patrol reported on 12 June that in SAN-WAN Myon, not on map but one mile South of MIRYANG (1173 - 1393), at 0400, 9 June, ten members of the outlawed "Democratic Young Men's Association" broke into the house of the local Right Wing party leader and tried to burn it down. Before they could get the fire started the police arrived, dispersed them and arrested three; the other seven escaped. At 2300, 10 June ten members of the local Rightist party, hearing about the events of the day before and seeking revenge, assaulted one of the DYMA members causing him to be hospitalized. At MIRYANG at 2300, 11 June the DYMA learning of the assault on 10 June at SAN-WAN, assembled about a hundred men, and in retaliation attacked the Right Wing headquarters. The Rightists fled when the DYMA surrounded the office and started throwing rocks at it, causing much damage. The police arrived and dispersed the mob and arrested eight of the DYMA leaders. Minor disturbances have also been reported in ULSAH (1230 - 1402) and in SAMNANGJIN (1383 - 1331) during the past few days. The Leftist elements in KYONGSANG-SOUTH after several months of inactivity appear once again DECLASSIFIED Authority NND745070 [illegible signature] 6 5 9 (over) 400 제주4·3사건 추가진상조사자료집 3 Confidential to be coming to the [illegible]. b. Cholla-South: Extract from a CIC report of 12 June 1947: "Strikes - On CHEJU Island (951 - 1149) on 2 June approximately 180 students of the 3rd year class of the CHEJU Girls' Middle School went on strike. Demands for the most part are levied against the principal and insist on (1) higher type courses, (2) a stop to fascistic education, (3) ousting of fascistic molecules in the school, and (4) a correction of the principals actions. No political significance has been noted as yet, however, the cry against fascistic elements and domination sounds vaguely familiar carrying a 'red' undertone." 4. Summary of Intelligence of Adjacent Areas. None reported. 5. Miscellaneous. None. Edwards EDWARDS A C of S, G-2 4 Confidential DECLASSIFIED Authority NND745070
