Confidential G-2 PERIODIC REPORT From: 1800I 18 Mar 47 To : 1800I 19 Mar 47 HQ 6TH INF DIV Pusan, Korea 1900I 19 March 1947 No: 517. MAPS: KOREA, 1/250,000. 1. Non-Operational Intelligence: None reported. 2. Counterintelligence. Subversive Activity. Illegal Activity of a Subversive Nature. a. Extract from KWANGJU CIC Report of 15 March 1947: "On 16 March 47, agents of the MOKPO (938 - 1307) Sub-Office arrested AN, Toh Jun, age 36, member of 'South Korea Labor Party', and propaganda chairman of 'Democratic Young Men's Union' for posting propaganda handbills on telephone poles. The handbills read: 'Rid the police department of Pro-Japs. We need a police department without any reactionary elements. Positively oppose terrorism.'" b. KWANGJU CIC on 15 March 1947 reported that at the request of the CHONJU CIC they aided CHONJU police detectives in confiscating a .32 caliber American pistol from a Korean in TAMYANG (997 - 1371). The Korean and the pistol were taken to CHONJU. 3. Civil Relations. a. General Conditions. (1) A 1st Bn, 63rd Inf, motorized patrol on 18 March 47, to KWONCHON-NI (1027 - 1414), NAMWON (1036 - 1382) and UNBONG (1055 - 1386) found conditions quiet along the route, but people in the towns covered are complaining of a shortage of food. Prices vary from 5,600 yen per suk of rice in NAMWON to 6,500 yen per suk in UNBONG. (2) A 2nd Bn, 63rd Inf, motorized patrol on 18 March 1947, to PUAN (975 - 1421), CHULPO (968 - 1405) and the sea-coast, found conditions quiet but posters are being erected commending the Oct 46 and March 47 disturbances. b. Civil Disturbances by Province. (1) Cholla-North: (a) Further investigation of disturbance at PONGJIN-NI (976 - 1423) (not on map), 1½ miles NE of PUAN, on 10 March 47 (Reference G-2 Report #510, 12 March) disclosed that the purpose of the demonstration was to spread Communist propaganda and to increase party membership. The excuse for the meeting was the funeral of a member of the "South Korea Labor Party". (b) Extract from CHONJU CIC Report #478: "A running fight occurred at about 1500, 17 March 47, at KUNSAN (972 - 1450) between ten members of the 'Northwest Youth Alliance' and 30 members of the 'Democratic Young Men's Alliance'. Three 'Northwest Youth Alliance' men were injured and one 'Democratic Young Men's Alliance' man was arrested. A report was received by this Hq that another fight occurred between these two groups on 18 March 47. Investigation is being conducted." DECLASSIFIED Authority NND745070 Confidential 965 (over) Confidential (c) CHONJU City Police reported that at 1500, 17 March 47, about 77 Leftists out of a group of 200 in the vicinity of ESAN Myon, 9 miles W of CHONJU (1015 - 1432), were arrested; the group was armed with spears and clubs and were gathered for the purpose of stopping the recruiting campaign of some members of the "Society for the Acceleration for Korean Independence". CIC is investigating. (2) Cholla-South: On CHEJU Island (951 - 1151) all strikes are ended except those of the school students. c. Political Parties. Extract from KWANGJU CIC Report of 15 March 47: "The following information was received from informants of the YOSU (1075 - 1300) area which state that the political situation is quiet. Two members of the 'Antitrusteeship Alliance' were attacked about three days ago and it is believed that Leftists young men were responsible. Due to this attack about 30 members from the KWANGJU (991 - 1350) Committee went to YOSU in support of their comrades. Inaugural ceremonies will be held by the 'South Korea Labor Party' at the YOSU theatre on 17 March 47 and about 2000 persons are expected. With the 30 Anti-trusteeship members present in the area trouble is expected to arise." 4. Summary of Intelligence in Adjacent Areas. None reported. 5. Miscellaneous. KWANGJU CIC on 15 March 47, reported that Chinese and Formosan smugglers operating between DAIREN and YOSU have increased and as a result black-market activities in YOSU are flourishing.
