(EXTRACT: 7th Inf Di- G-2 Periodic Report #59, 12 March 1947):
"Attack on U. S. Troops - At approximately 092200 March 47, an unidentified Korean accosted Pfc W. G. Ferroll, RA12245601 and Pvt Jack Sandhan, RA12248739, both of 31st Infantry Regiment, at a point one block west of the 31st Inf traffic circle. The Korean asked if the two men had anything to sell. While the Korean was talking they continued to walk down the street. As they came in front of an alley, the Korean hurriedly left them and at almost the same time the soldiers heard a shot and noticed people running. On looking around they saw a man leaning from an upper window, then they saw a flash and heard a bullet pass close by. The soldiers ran and another shot was fired after them. Weapon is believed to have been a pistol.
"The building was searched on 10 March and occupants were questioned. Occupants heard the shots. The words 'Korean' 'American' and 'Cigarettes were written in English on a dirty window."
