WEEKLY ACTIVITIES OF KMAG 319.1 CG, USAFIK CHIEF, KMAG 14 June 1949 WBW:oy 1. Conference was held 8 June with Chief, KMAG, Minister of Natl Def Shin, Maj Gen Chae, C/S KA. Subjects discussed included the following: a. A 20,000-man increase in KA, which will be accomplished by increasing the strength of existing units. It is planned that only two (2) new regiments will be activated in the immediate future. b. The need for added security in Sobingo housing area was brought to the attention of the Minister, who offered assurance that addtl trps would be provided to adequately safeguard American billets. c. Agreement was reached that the course of instruction at KMA would be established at one year. It was further decided to establish an Inf School and a small staff school with target date 15 July 49. d. The move of DMD and Hq, KA, to former US 7th Div area concurred in, and will be accomplished prior to 4 July. Surveys for space allocations are in progress. e. Further pressure was brought to bear to complete the KMA rifle range, a project which has been underway for almost a year. f. A request from the Reserve Corps in the amount of 66 million won for uniforms was discussed. As the amount is already in the Reserve budget, the problem involved the allocation of materials and production facilities. The problem was resolved and production has been authorized. g. Tentative plans are being made by KA to initiate a long-range trp housing program, starting with a detailed requirements study. h. It is agreed that to improve the quality of KA training, unit Advisors will report to Chief, KMAG, any KA CO who fails to accept Advisors' advice on trng matters, or who fails to follow a trng schedule. 2. On 7 June, Chief, KMAG, addressed the Division Commanders, KA, at which time he emphasized their responsibilities and the need for improved trng at all levels. 3. G-1: US Off pers: Total 154; gains 3; losses 1. US Enl pers: Total 314; gains 5; losses 1. US Civ pers: Total 12; gains 0; losses 0. KA Strength: 4903 Off; 66223 EM 3827 Rcts; Total 74953. KCC Strength: 467 Off; 259 Nldn; 4707 EM; Total 5433. Res Strength: 250 Off; 1222 Cadet Off; 254 Students; 26859 EM; Total 28,585. Re- sults: KIA MIA FOW MIA KA 61 132 0 48 Enemy 292 2 9 0 Above figures include those on Ongjin Peninsula, which accounts for approximately 95% of casualties shown. NK forces now occupy peninsula westward from line (829-1496) - (823-1622). Strength and composition of NK forces in area is unk. Only elements 4th Bn, 3rd Brig, Bo An Dae have been identified. b. During period, 300 graduates of NK Political School attempted to infiltrate into SK through Odae San region. Were intercepted by elements of 8th and 10th Regts who dispersed them, killing 70 and capturing 49. It is estimated that approximately 50 invaders remain in the area. c. 14 incidents within SK during period 4-10 June. Results: KIA MIA FOW MIA KA 5 2 0 0 Guerrillas 65 0 15 0 d. Only 1 incident on Chaju Do during period. 3 guerrillas, including Lee Duk Koo - Chief Communist leader, and his executive Officer were killed at this time. e. Personnel suspected of Leftist activities who have not been taken into custody: 20 Off; 63 NCO's; 78 EM. 5. G-3: a. Trng inspn of KMA conducted by Advisory team. Results were generally satisfactory. b. Trng inspns of 3rd and 5th Divs in progress; 6th Div inspn starts 14 June, upon completion of which all KA Divs will have been inspected by US inspn teams. Follow-up inspns being planned for mid-Aug and Sept to insure that corrective action has been taken as a result of first inspns. 2 DECLASSIFIED Authority NND 020855 SUBJ: Mdly Activities of KMAG 14 June 49 MHSWtey e.
