319.1 WEEKLY ACTIVITIES OF KMAG CG, USAFIK Chief, KMAG 17 May 1949 WC:ey 1. Reorganization of DND has been approved and the establishment of the new organization has been initiated. It is anticipated that the revised establishment will be in operation by 17 May 1949. G-2 KA has moved his operations office to DND building in space made available by reduction of DND bureaus. 2. G-1 Matters: US Off Personnel: Total 132; Gains 40; Losses 2. US Enl Personnel: Total 151; Gains 6; Losses 22. US Civ Personnel: Total 11; Gains 0; Losses 0. KA Strength: 3167 Off; 64832 EM; 1653 Cadets; 69652 Total. KCG Strength: 453 Off; 260 Midn; 4737 EM; 5450 Total. Res Strength: 250 Off; 25989 EM; 235 Cadets; 260 Student Off; Total 27334. 3. G-2: a. Elections were held 10 May on Cheju Do in which an estimated 89% of the electorate participated. No disturbances reported. b. 7 minor incidents reported during current period within interior of SK. Following casualties resulted: Guerrillas: KIA 63; WIA 0; POW 0. KA : KIA 3; WIA 3. c. No addtl members of 1st or 2nd Bns, 5th Regt, KA, which defected en masse to NK on 5 May have returned to SK. Hq KA indicates the personnel of these units have been moved well North up the peninsula. d. 18 border incidents during period 7-13 May. Results follow: Guerrillas: KIA 20; WIA 70. KA : KIA 2; WIA 3. e. On 13 May, YMS 508 of the South Korea Navy, with Commander Hwang Un Soo in command and carrying a complement of 5 Off and 35 EM, deserted to NK. Radio Pyong Yang reported arrival of vessel at Wonsan, NK. Armament of YMS 508 consisted of 1 37mm gun; 1 Cal50 MG; 2 Cal30 MG; 5 Cal30 Carbines and 3 Cal45 pistols. Intensive loyalty checks are continuing in an effort to finally eliminate all potential traitors. 4. Opns and Trng: a. Chiri San and Cheju Do areas are quiet. b. After-action reports from units participating in Kaesong incident 4-6 May indicate original reports of NK forces involved were greatly exaggerated, as were the initial reports of casualties inflicted on NK. Restudy of casualties by G-2 KA indicates an estimated 150 enemy KIA, 21 friendly KIA. c. A series of trng inspns of all KA units has been started by KMAG personnel to determine degree of combat efficiency attained by KA units, to Co level. To date, inspn of 7th Brig has been completed.
