MISCELLANEOUS No. 2391
1. Rebel Activity:
a. Organization: Rebel strength in western South Kyongsang Province consists of 310 men, divided into eight companies of about 38 men each (F-2), according to a recently captured former Korean Army soldier of the old 14th Regiment, elements of which precipitated the Yosu-Sunchon revolt of Oct 48 (Intell. Summary 2242). HONG Sun Suk commands the rebels and is assisted by KIM Chi Whei, chief of staff (F-1), the source said. Each company reportedly has two light machine guns, with the remainder of the men armed with M-1 rifles and carbines. (F-5) The rebels obtain information of the National Police and movements and plans of the Korean Army through civilians, who are members of the South Korean Labor Party. (F-1)(a)
Source Comment: The number of light machine guns appears greatly exaggerated. Many of the rebels are armed with Japanese rifles and homemade weapons. The source may have confused the machine guns with automatic rifles or sub-machine guns. (a)
