None reported. 2. Counterintelligence. Subversive Activity. a. Sabotage. (1) KYONGJU (1219 - 1436) - During the night of 8-9 May 48, two telephone poles and one pole carrying electric power lines were sawed down and left on the ground between KYONGJU and TONGYANG (1124 - 1436). (A-1) (2) SONGJONG-NI (933 - 1310) - Further investigation of train derailment in tunnel at coordinates (952.1 - 1324.8) reveals that bolts and spikes were removed from one rail inside the tunnel. (G-2 P/R No. 932, dtd 9 May 48.) (A-1) (3) SANGJU-SO (1165 - 1355) - (not on map) - On 8 May 48, the Election Office was burned down. Police are investigating. (B-2) (4) CHEJU-UP (952 - 1152) - On 8 May 48, unknown persons destroyed bridges between SINMU-RI (935 - 1147) and CHEJU-UP. (B-2) b. Terrorism. (1) TAEGU (1157 - 1439) - At 0915, 9 May 48, the village clerk, a prominent Rightist, of BON HYUNG DONG, a suburb of TAEGU, was killed by four men, armed with knives. (A-1) (2) CHINJU (1108 - 1356) - On the morning of 9 May 48, a grenade was thrown into the office of CHO, Sun Noe, a candidate for election. No casualties resulted. (Police report) (3) ULSAN (1230 - 1402) - On the morning of 9 May 48, the wife of a candidate was killed by a crowd of undetermined size. The attackers also cut off the ear of one of the male members of the family. (Police report) (4) CHUNYANG (1157 - 1569) - On the morning of 9 May 48, four Rightists were killed and five were injured by a group of forty persons, armed with two carbines and steel tipped spears. Police are investigating. (Police report) (5) YONHA (969 - 1300) - At 0010, 9 May 48, a group of eight men, attacked the home of the local head of the United Young Men's Party. The man's wife was beaten. (Police report) 3. Civil Relations. Civil Disturbances by Province. ... Kyongsang-North: Wolbae Lyun (1151 - 1432) - At 2100, on 9 May 48, a group of twenty Leftists, armed with Japanese sabers, knives and poles, attempted to capture the police sub-station. The police opened fire, killing two attackers. Eight others were arrested. The remainder escaped into the mountains. (Police report). Confidential 387 DECLASSIFIED Authority NND745070 Confidential b. Kyongsang-South: (1) Koha Hyun (1140 - 1403) - On the morning of 9 May 48, five leftists attempted, without success, to attack the police box. Details are being sought. (Police report) (2) HACHONG (1105 - 1329) - On the night of 8-9 May 48, the local police box was attacked by a group of twenty persons. One rifle was taken by the attackers. (Police report) c. Cholla-South: (1) Tong Hyun (1002 - 1331) - At 0100, 9 May 48, approximately twenty men, attacked a polling place and seriously injured a member of the election committee, before being dispersed by the police. (B-2) (2) Tam Hyun (1060 - 1348) - At 0410, 9 May 48, twenty unidentified men, attacked the local police box. Two policemen were wounded and one of the attackers was killed. Two U.S. Carbines and a Jap rifle were taken by the group. (3) To m Hyun (990 - 1322) - At 1320, 9 May 48, police raided an illegal meeting at which twenty persons were present. When the group resisted arrest, police shot and killed one. (B-2) (4)CHANGSU G-UP (960 - 1372) - At 0700, 9 May 48, fifteen members of the "Self Protection Group" armed with bamboo spears, killed two policemen, who were assigned to a voting place. Three suspected members of the group were arrested. (B-2) (5) Maebu Hyun (950 - 1351) - At 2000, 9 May 48, a group of approximately forty men, armed with a US Carbine and one Jap rifle, shot to death a prominent local Rightist. The crowd then set fire to his home. (Police report). (6) YONGJU (969 - 1306) - At 2300, 9 May 48, a group of twenty men attempted to attack the local police box, but were repulsed by police without casualties. (B-2) (7) Kumso Hyun (965 - 1305) - At 2300, 9 May 48, a group of twenty men, armed with a rifle and bamboo spears, attacked the home of a brother of the local United Young Men's Party head. PUSAN: On the night of 8 May 48, a Korean policeman on guard at the Railway Hotel, fell asleep. His U.S. Carbine, No. 727530, was stolen.
