다음 메시지는 1948년 10월 23일 오후 4시 40분 주한미육군사령부 암호실로부터 받은 것이다.
10월 23일 오전 7시 30분 경비대 제9연대 부연대장과 사병 4명이 타고 가던 경비대 지프가 조천리(965-1155) 서쪽 간선도로에서 매복 중이던 무장대의 습 격을 받았다. 부연대장과 사병 2명이 부상당했다. (A-2)
10월 23일 오전 4시 25분 무장대가 제주읍 남동쪽 높은 산등성이에서 제주읍
(962-1153)를 향해 발포했다. 발포 대부분은 마을 동쪽에 있는 경찰지서를 겨냥 했고 대략 100발이 발사됐다. 피해는 없다. 무장대는 발포 20분 후에 철수했다.

At 230730 October Constabulary jeep containing Executive
Officer and four (4) enlisted men of 9th Regiment of Korean Constbulary was ambushed by raiders on main road West of CHOCHUL-XX (965-
1155). Executive Officer and two (2) enlisted men were wounded.

At 230445 October raiders opened fire on CHEJU CITY (962-
1153) from a high ridge southeast of town. Most of the fire was directed at Police Box at eastern side of town, about 100 rounds were fired. No damage. Raiders withdrew after 20 minutes of firing.
