G-2 PERIODIC REPORT From: 020800/I July 48 To : 030800/I July 48 Confidential Headquarters, USAFIK Seoul, Korea 1000/I 03 July 1948 No. 876 MAPS: KOREA, 1/250,000 Eastern ASIA, 1/1,000,000 1. ARMED FORCES a. South Korean Police Fire On Northern Village At 020100 July South Korean police began firing at the north Korean village of KYUSADONG (935.0 - 1597.5) from positions near (934.9-1596.7) and continued sporadic firing until 0700 hours. Approximately 50 rounds were fired by the police and none was returned from the village. Two Korean houses were set afire during this action. During the entire incident observers saw no fire from north of the parallel. The South Korean police claimed, however, that they had seen North Korean Constabularymen and therefore had started the fire fight. (7th Div. Flash report B-2) COMMENT: It has been noted previously that some of the North Korean Constabulary aggression is probably retaliatory. 2. POLITICAL ACTIVITIES Communist Agents In Disguise In South Korea Numerous communist agents are reportedly in South Korea disguised as merchants or beggars. To serve as an identification to their friends these agents often wind a white thread around the middle finger of the left hand. (CIC S/I, 1 July F-6) 3. CIVIL UNREST a. Communist Terrorism Negative b. Rightist Terrorism Negative c. Terrorism by Unidentified Groups [illegible] Policeman Killed by Rightist Youth On 01 July, while on a patrol along the 38th parallel, a policeman from the CHANG KOK police box (917.9-1666.4), was killed by a member of the UNITED YOUNG MEN'S PARTY. After the assassination the UNITED YOUNG MEN'S PARTY member escaped into North Korea with one Japanese machine gun, one Japanese rifle and one U.S. carbine. (CIC Flash report, G-3) 4.
