e. 폭도들 제주도 마을 습격 세 무리의 무장대들이 5월 14일 오후 1시 한림(934-1138)을 여러 방향에서 공 격했으나 경찰과 경비대의 합동작전으로 격퇴되었다. 무장대 5명이 사망했다. 이 들 무장대는 다음 날 오후 3시에 재차 한림을 공격하여 경찰 1명을 살해하고 몇 차례 불을 질렀다. (미군정보고, B-2)
g. 공산주의자들, 선거 후 폭동계획 수령 8월 15일 이전에 실행될 공산주의자들의 계획은 다음과 같다 :
(1) 선거 당선인, 경찰과 미국 기관의 정보원 암살.
(2) 미국 기관에 고용된 사람에 대한 협박.
(3) 군정 조선인 직원들이 파업하도록 협박.

1. ARMED FORCES
a. U.S. Patrol Ambushed by North Koreans
A five man U.S. patrol was ambushed in the vicinity of (1009.0-1696.5) at 152215 May by North Korean Constabularymen. The Americans were not harmed. (7th Div Flash Rpt. B-2)
b. North Koreans Attack South Korean Police
Two attacks were made on the South Korean police box near parallel marker #34, in the vicinity of (919.4-1685.7), by approximately 70 North Korean Constabularymen between the hours of 160245 May and 160430 May. The police fired approximately 2000 rounds of ammunition and the NKC fired approximately 1500 rounds, with no reported casualties.

c. North Korean Constabularymen Violate Parallel
Two North Korean Constabularymen violated the parallel in the vicinity of OP #7 (888.7-1695.6) and fired on a truck coming from North KOREA to South KOREA at about 151500 May.
Three South Korean police in the vicinity returned the fire.
Approximately 100 rounds were expended by both sides, with no reported casualties. (7th Div Flash Rpt. Police Report)

Border Battle
At 151325 May seven trucks, each with a load of approximately 35 North Korean Constabularymen, were observed at KALSON-NI (888.9-1698.8). The NKC took up positions along the parallel and were opposed by about 30 South Korean police. At 151330 automatic weapon and rifle fire was heard for a few minutes at OP #7. Practically all firing had ceased at 151440 and no further action was reported. (7th

a. Rightist Home Bombed in KYONGSANG-PUKTO
At 150300 May an unknown number of rioters threw a bomb into the home of a rightist business man in TAEGU.

b. Police Break Up Communist Meeting in KYONGSANG-PUKTO
At 160420 May a hand grenade was thrown into the home of a staff member of the SOUTH KOREA LABOR PARTY in
TAEGU. Police, investigating, found ten communists holding a meeting. The communists attacked the police with swords and bamboo spears. Two communists were killed, one wounded and one arrested in the fight and the police confiscated a telescope, five spears and one sword. (CIC Flash Rpt.

c. Communists Demonstrate in SEOUL
At 151715 May from 100 to 150 students approached the KWANGHA MOON police box in SEOUL distributing the usual communist anti-election propaganda handbills. The police broke up the demonstration by firing in the air. It was later reported that two of the crowd and one child were wounded and 14 boys and 2 girls were arrested. (CIC Flash

d. Police Box and Rightist Homes Bombed In SEOUL
(1) At 162055 May a bomb was thrown at a police box in SEOUL. No damage resulted to the police installation, but one woman bystander was injured. The assailant was arrested. (7th Div Flash Rpt. B-2)
(2) The home of the head man of the CHUNG DO district, SEOUL, was blown up at approximately 162115 May.
(3) At 162050 May a bomb was thrown into the yard of a leader of RU SANG DONG in SEOUL. No injuries or damage resulted. (CIC Flash Rpt. Police Report)

e. Raiders Attack CHEJU-DO Village
Three groups of raiders attacked different parts of the village of HALLIM (934-1138) at 141300 May, but were driven off by combined police and constabulary action. Five of the raiders were killed. Groups of raiders again attacked the village at 151500 May, killing one policeman and starting several fires. (MG Rpt B-2)
f. Rightists Attack Rival Party Headquarters in KYONGGI-DO
Approximately 30 NORTHWEST YOUNG MEN'S ASSOCIATION members attacked the DAI DONG YOUTH headquarters in APEKCHON
(933.5-1695.5) at 161700 May, destroying furniture and a hand-operated fire truck. The same mob attacked the home of the DAI DONG YOUTH leader, beat up the leader and his mother and ransacked the house. As a result of this attack nine people were injured. At about 162000 May approximately 200 members of the DAI DONG and the local fire department gathered to attack the NORTHWEST YOUNG MEN'S ASSOCIATION members in retaliation, but the police interposed and dispersed the mob.
The leader of the NWYM party denied any knowledge of the incident. (7th Div Flash Rpt. B-3)
g. Communists Receive Post-Election Riot Plans
Communist plans which are supposedly to be put into effect prior to 15 August include the following:
(1) Assassination of successful candidates and informants of the police and American organizations.
(2) Threatening of employees of American organizations.
(3) Threatening of Korean MG officials so that they will go on strike.
In addition to these specific points, attacks on the police are to continue. (CIC S/I, 15 May. C-3)
4. PSYCHOLOGICAL
a. KANGWON-DO Communists Confused By Election Outcome
Members of the SOUTH KOREA LABOR PARTY in KANGWON-DO were surprised and bewildered at the success of the election, as they had been told it would never be held. The non-appearance of the promised reinforcements from North KOREA was an additional let down and there is uncertainty among the local party members as to what is the best political policy now that Communism has lost in South KOREA. b. Success of Election Surprise to CHOLLA-NAMDO Citizens
Opinions in KWANGJU (990-1350) indicate surprise, and in the case of rightists, satisfaction, that the election was so successful. The communists are offering the excuse that if opposition had been as active in the provinces as in
SEOUL, the election would have been a complete failure.
