CIVIL UNREST a. Riots Continue On CHEJU DO (1) On the afternoon of 19 April a police detail repairing telephone lines between CHEJU City (950-1150) and the Air Strip was fired on intermittently. No casualties resulted. (CIC P/R #93. Police rpt) (2) At 192200 April an uncle of a policeman was robbed of 70,000 won and then killed near AEWOL (931-1146). (CIC P/R #93. Police rpt) (3) At 200300 April approximately two hundred (200) men approached the picket lines in the rear of the constabulery compound at MOSULPO (925-1116). The guard opened fire and dispersed the group. (CIC P/R #93. Police rpt) (4) At 200130 April snipers opened fire from the high ground overlooking CHEJU City (950-1150). They apparently were firing toward the dock area where coast guard ships were being unloaded. (CIC P/R #93. Police rpt) (5) The police have arrested one communist who admitted being among those involved in the HWADO-RI police box attack on 03 April in which one policeman was killed. (CIC P/R #93. Anti-Election Handbill Campaign in SEOUL Anti-election propaganda handbills were widely distributed in SEOUL on 17 and 18 April. Handbills distributed in the South Gate Market were directed to women, laborers and the general public and those distributed in KONG PYUNG DONG were directed to students. (CIC P/R #93. Rioters Attempt to Assassinate Youth Leader in CHUNGCHONG-PUKTO Four rioters entered the home of the Chairman of the UNITED YOUNG MEN'S PARTY in OK SAN Myun (1052-1480) at 122330 April and attempted to assassinate the party chairman. The UYME member escaped uninjured through a window as the rioters fired at him. (CIC P/R #93. B-2) d. UNITED YOUNG MEN'S PARTY Organize Suicide Squad in CHUNGCHONG PUKTO The CHCNGJU (1050-1550) branch of the UNITED YOUNG MEN'S PARTY has reorganized their "SUICIDE SQUADS" for the purpose of securing the success of the election.
