CHEJU-DO TASK FORCE JOURNAL 31 July 1948 SUBJECT: Journal For Weeks 20-31 July TO : Commanding Officer Twentieth Infantry APO 6 Unit 2 20 July (Tuesday) Started off my first day as CO of Cheju Task Force by reading General Wards letter and digested the contentsxxx. Naturally I intend to do my best to take advantages of this independent command. During the morning we had training while the usual number performed guard duty. In the afternoon we had khx details policing the wood and debris about the area. The storm really made a mess of this place. The captenters were busy s usual as they screened the latrine and another put a roof on the generator shed. There is saome more work to be done on the screening. A few are punched out and sone doore do not remain closed of their own accord. I'm a little worried about Malaria Control and intend to stress it a great deal in the next week. During my inspection of barracks this morning I noticed too that that building is a serious fire hazard. It would go up v ery quickly if it ever caught fire. Having 10 more butt cans made for that building. After supper we had a number of men out for athletics. The soft ball team practiced for a while and a great number of the men have taken a fancy to the golf clubs which we just unpacked. The wirstrip is a wonderful place to play golf and I talked to several of the men tonight about rigging up a golf course. They are all for it and so am I. I think the athletic facilities here are adequate. Those who are interested in athletics find plenty to do. We are going to put a tennis court next week. And when we get our horseshoe courts that should round out our athletics facilities. Phoned Major Noel, CO of the 59th MG Group, tonight in connection with the expected arrival of a cruiser and a destroyer from the US Navy tomrrow afternoon. He is not certain what the schedule will be although he expects them to visit our camp. afirst look at this camp is very depressing but I don't blame that on those who gave commanded this unit before my time. They have had to struggle with things should be painted and that some landscaping should be done. I consider the quarters and facilities here to be below average in every respect. 21 July (Wednesday) Usual training and duty during the morning after physical training I went into Cheju for the purpose of talking to sever 1 of the MG officers. Made arrangements with Lt. Wible for shipment of a generator, 51 barrels, a motor and 5 fire units to Kwangju. Talked to the Mess Officer, Lt. Sabotay about getting ice cr am a little more often. He promised me we could get it three times a week. Talked to Captain Burns about the incoming freight ship. He said we could expect only a small amo unt of beer and no coke. This unit h s been without beer and coke for five weeks. Have sent a radio to Kwangju for some relief on this situation. The MG's are supposed to supply us with thise items bup they have not been doing so. It is not the MG's here that are holding out on us. I am sure they make an equitable breakdown when those items come in. But the fact that there has b een no beer and coke here for that lenght of time indicates the supply line is weak someplace. Talked to the Medical Office, Lt. Lee, about the high VE rate here at Cheju. He was no aware that it was extremely high. I believe this w.s due to the fact that several of the men who had cont cted VE here was no hospitalized until they returned to Camp Sykes. Within the last two months at least seven (7) men have contacted Vd while stationed with this unit. I secured a large ounity of pro-kits from the Doctor and intend to clamp down harshly on men I find violating regultions reguards departure from the post. Made a raid last night with Mr. Stoops of the CIC on several possible brothels and found only a small amount of GI clothing. Evidently someone h d tipped them off because we expected these houses to have numerous items. We suspect one Korean who works here. I know he n mes the EMs who have been frequenting these places and intend to watch them very closely the next few days. Had a ball game scheduled with the bXXt MG's for this afternoon. Cancelled because of rain. Started painting. the day room, kitchen, nd BOQ this afternoon. Using green water paint. carpenters working on roofing which was blown off by the typhoon. after dinner had a short arm inspection then had the Medical Officer inspect our kitchen and the Korearns. 22 July (Thursday) Usual guard duty and training. had details working on cleaning up the are, gettting rocks to fix roads and painting outsides of the buildings. Went in to MG compound to check on shipment of generator, gasoline, fire units and a ctor. Gasoline had been loaded and shipped without my permission. Sent radio to Hq 20th to make sure someone picks up the gas and drums when it arrives at Mokpo. Other items to be shipped as soon as another vessel arrives. 23 July ( Friday) Usual guard and training xxd in the morning. Details working on painting and policing up the area in the afternoon. Has trouble getting sufficient water out of the well. The well will pump plenty of water one day and none the next. Am starting an accurate log of just how mu ch water we get and when. 24July (Saturday) Issued new passes to the Kore ns. Fired one so we have only 6 in the whole camp now. The soldiers from the MG Group in Cheju City are very undisciplined in my opinion and I think our group here realizes that. 25 July ( Sunday) Three of us from the Fack Force went in for 0900 Mass at the Catholic Mission. H d a long talk with the two priests, Father Sweeny and Father Dawson, x about the rule of the Japs during the war and the present situation in Korea. They both feel th t civil war would start the day after the americans left, if and when they did. The force here is on the alert today and everyone is staying in camp or nearby due to the constabulary operation taking place near Sungsaeng-ak and Nora-ak. They are trying to clean up dome of the r iding partied supposedly training in the vicinity of these two towns. From all I can gather from those who know these operations by the constabulary are very inefficient. Xeh The constabulary troops themsefs do not want to shoot fellow Kore ns althou h they do not mind taking a pot shot at a policeman. Their method of conducting these operations designid to rout out Communist raiders in the hills is such that anyone can very easily escape. Defeats their purpose from the very beginning in addition to giving the Communis s a sense of superiority because they have outsmarted the Constabulary. Lt. Jones the present air Corps offcer in charge of the field is working today get ing some bad spots in xx his airfield resodded by the Kpreans. 26 X July (Monday) Lt. Weslowoski gave me a report on the constabulary operation in the vicinity of Sungsaeng-ak and Nore-ak. They captured 10 rounds of Jap ammo, 9 suspected communist raiders, and 1 messenger carrying 100,000 yen and a list of 100 rightists. Many of these rightists were persons who had given the polce information about the communists. One whole regiment took took part in this operation and they used up 30,000 rounds of M-1 ammunition.
