Prisoners From CHOLLA-NAMDO Uprising Sentenced A total of 847 prisoners from the YOSU-SUNCHON uprising were sent to the TAEJON (1040-1490) prison. Three hundred and ninetyseven (397) have been tried and given the following sentences: 23 - acquitted 28 - 5 years imprisonment 211 - death 27 - 1 year imprisonment 107 - life imprisonment One person tried is being held for further investigation. It is expected that the remainder of the prisoners will be tried by 28 November. (B-2) b. Round Up Of Raiders Continues In KANGWON-DO On 19 November the police killed 1 raider and captured another in the vicinity of HUNGJONG (1128-1654). The police confiscated 1 American rifle, 24 rounds of ammunition and 1 hand grenade. (CIC Flash Report. Police Report) c. Recent Activities On CHEJU-DO On 19 November 4 houses were observed burning in the village of SAM TCHEUN DONG (956-1145). A U.S. air observer saw approximately 10 Constabularymen in SAM TCHEUN DONG at the time the village was burning. (CIC Flash Report. B-2) Fifteen raiders were reportedly killed by Constabularymen at WOLFYONG-NI (957-1146) on 21 November. (Constabulary Report) d. Recent Activities In CHOLLA-NAMDO The Constabularymen of the 3rd Constabulary Regiment who were captured by raiders on 15 November in the vicinity of SANCHONG (1050- 1370) and later escaped (P/R #992) reported that 10 additional Constabularymen had escaped from the raiders and that 12 had been killed by civilians, most of them by women, in an unknown place and that the raiders had taken all the clothing and personal property from the Constabularymen they killed. (Constabulary Report) On 19 November an estimated 200 raiders surrounded a school building in KURYE in which officers of the 12th Regiment were billeted. At approximately 200400 November the raiders attacked the building and wounded 3 men from the 12th Regiment. Elements of the 12th Regiment counter-attacked and the mutineers withdrew southeast in the direction of HADONG (1075-1340). Three Constabularymen were killed and 16 were Confidential DECLASSIFIED Authority [illegible] XXIV CORPS G-2 F/R #994 Confidential wounded. Fifty of the mutineers were reportedly killed in this action. (Constabulary Report) During the period 190415 November to 191700 November the 12th Regiment reportedly killed 203 raiders, captured 37 raiders and also apprehended 450 members of the SOUTH KOREA LABOR PARTY. Seven Constabularymen were killed and an unknown number were wounded. The following equipment was captured by the Constabulary force: 2 - 60 MM Mortars 106 - M-1 Rifles 8 - Light Machine Guns 2 - Carbines 1785 - Rounds of Cal. 30 ammunition Miscellaneous clothing and equipment. (Constabulary Report) On 20 November an alleged raider headquarters was located at NAM BOK DAE (1052-1371). One company, composed of constabulary officers, planned to attack this headquarters. (Constabulary Report) Two members of the SOUTH KOREA LABOR PARTY were reportedly executed at the 3rd Constabulary Regiment headquarters (1044-1370) on 20 November. A Lt. HONG Sun Sok, formerly with the 14th Regiment, is believed to be the leader of the raiders in the WI AN RI (1049-1373) area. (Constabulary Report) c. Raider Groups In CHOLLA-NAMDO (Delayed Reports) At approximately 171530 November an estimated 50 civilian raiders, believed to be traveling in the direction of NAJU (1072-1335), assembled in the mountain area in FUSUNG Gun (990-1350). (Police Report) At 178000 November approximately 50 civilian raiders were reportedly assembling in SUNCHON Gun (1035-1342). (Police Report) On 17 November an unknown number of armed raiders kidnapped 5 civilian men in the vicinity of (979-1347). Two of the kidnapped men were found killed and a third seriously wounded in the same area on 18 November. The remaining two of the group kidnapped have not yet been found. (Police Report) f. Capture of NAJU Raiders Completed The remainder of the Constabularymen from the 4th Regiment who mutinied at NAJU (970-1355) on 02 November, with the exception of the leader, reportedly were captured in the vicinity of CHANGSONG (980-1370) on 16 November. INTELLIGENCE CONCERNING ADJACENT AREAS Riots Reported In North KOREA At 200200 November non-communists in HAEJU (875-1700) reportedly started a riot and killed over 4,000 communist troops and surrounded an additional 1,000.
