CIVIL CONDITIONS South Korean Guerrilla Forces: b. During the period, fighting between Cheju Do guerrilla forces and government forces on that island began anew. The following are reports of raider activities, received during the period, extracted from CIC daily periodic reports: (1) At approximately 182100 September 1948, four (4) raiders came to Ko Sung Li (933-1145) Sung San Myun and killed O Man Soon, ex-chief of the"County Protection Union" (HYANG BO DAN) and Kim Man Poong. (C-2) (2) On 18 September 1948, approximately twelve (12) people residing at Suh Kwang Li (930-1124), An Duk Myun, were abducted by raiders but were released the following day. Apparently the abduction was intended to increase the prestige of the raiders. (C-2) (3) On 18 September 1948, about thirty (30) people residing at Ham Dok Li (963-1155), Cho Chun Myun, were forcibly mobilized by the raiders and made to set signal fires. (C-2) (4) On 17 September 1948, Kim Tai Ho, residing at Shi Heung Li (990-1147), Sung San Myun and another unknown individual were killed by armed raiders. (5) On 15 September 1948, Moon Too Chun, a member of the United Young Men's Association, residing at Hwa Won Li (942-1121), Cheung Moon Myun, was killed by raiders. (C-2) (6) The Keum Yung (975-1157) police sub-station was fired upon by raiders at approximately 171800 September 1948. No damage was done, no one was injured. (C-3) (7) On 25 September 1948, a rightist was killed with a Japanese saber by raiders while he was attending a funeral in the vicinity of Kun Nyong (974-1156). (C-2) (8) At 010700 October 1948, police stations on Cheju Do (exact locations unknown) were attacked and burned by raiders, five (5) policemen were killed, an unknown numbers of policemen were wounded, one (1) UNLP member was wounded and two (2) policemen were abducted. (B-2) (9) At approximately 011500 October 1948, four (4) members of the United Young Men's Party were kidnapped by three (3) armed raiders near Dohan Li, Cheju Up, Cheju Do. Of these four men, three (3) were subsequently killed; the other escaped. (B-2) (10) Many of the raiders involved in the 1 October 1948 incidents on Cheju Do were wearing Korean Constabulary uniforms. (B-2) (11) On 26 September 1948, two (2) boys were kidnapped and beaten by the raiders at Pong Dai Ri (981-1155), Kooja Myun and subsequently released. (C-2) (12) On 18 September 1948, Boo Ok Yung was arrested by the police in Sang Nyung Ni (935-1133), Hallim Myun and handbills and ammunition were found in his possession. He is the alleged leader of several attacks and killings in the vicinity. (C-2) (13) On 25 September 1948, vice-chairman of the rightist Self Defense Body (CHANI DAI), Pak in Jun, was stabbed to death by raiders in Kum Nyong (975-1157), Kooja Myun. (C-2) .(14) At 062300 October 1948, twenty (20) policemen exchanged fire with forty (40) armed raiders in the vicinity of Kumnyong (975-1157), Kujwa Myun. One policeman was wounded. (C-2) (15) On 7 October 1948, the majority of the villages on Cheju Do were subjected to a flood of leftist handbills and paper, North Korean flags. In at least five (5) villages located on the eastern portion of Cheju Do, the handbills and flags were accompanied by minor demonstrations. (A-1) (16) A mob of approximately two hundred (200) leftists demonstrated in front of the police sub-station at Cho Chon Ni (963-1154) during the evening of 7 October 1948.
