서북청년단원들이 폭동으로 혼란한 지역에서 임무를 수행하기 위해 수도경찰로부터 훈련을 받았다. 서북청년단원 가운데 건장한 지원자 600여 명이 수도경찰로부터 훈련을 받고 여수나 제주도 같은 폭동지역에 배치됐다. 훈련기간은 약 12일 정도였다. 모든 단원들은 경찰복을 입고 정규 경찰의 지위를 부여받았다. 현재 계획상 모든 단원들은 폭동지역에서 1개월 동안 근무를 끝내면 서울로 귀환하도록 되어 있다. 이들이 돌아오면 교대 병력이 서울에서 다시 파견될 것이다. 서북청년단 총무부장 이성겸에 따르면 몇몇 지원자가 현재 경찰에서 사용하는 일부 방법을 완전히 숙지하고 있지는 못하지만 대다수 지원자가 자신들의 임무에 만족하고 있다. 4. Northwest Young Men's Association Members Trained by Metropolitan Police for Duty in Areas disturbed by Riots: Approximately six hundred (600) able-bodied volunteers of the Northwest Young Men's Association have been trained by the Metropolitan Police and dispatched to such riot areas as Yosu and Chejudo. The training period lasted approximately twelve (12) days. All members are equipped with police uniforms and are on regular police status. Present plans call for each member to complete a one month tour of duty in riot areas and then return to Seoul. As each group returns, replacements will be sent from Seoul. According to Lee Song Kyum, Chief of General Affairs Section of the Northwest Young Men's Association, the majority of the volunteers are satisfied with their assignments, although a few are not in full accord with some of the methods presently used by the police.
