CHOLLA-SOUTH: Continued progress is being made by MG of CHOLLA-SOUTH Province in turning over governmental functions to Koreans. MG Companies in MOKPO (938 - 1307) and SUNCHON (1048 - 1327) are now supervised by only three officers, and it is expected that this number will be even further reduced in the near future. However, it is anticipated that small MG Detachments will remain in those areas for some time to maintain better licison within the province. Although there has been some question raised as to whether CHEJU Island is sufficiently self-supporting to carry the added burden of an extensive provincial government, plans are being completed to separate the CIEJU government from CHOLLA-SOUTH and raise it to a provincial level, effective 1 Aug 46. The government of CHOLLA-SOUTH on the provincial level is still being supervised more closely than at lower levels, with MG officers in KWANGJU (991 - 1350) supervising and reporting on the following departments: Agriculture and Commerce, Property Custodian, Home Affairs, Public Health, Public Safety, Public Utilities, Education and the Korean Constabulary. Two other major departments, Finance and Public Works, are now under the complete supervision of Korean department heads.
