3. 민간인 소요
f. 제주도에서 마을들 피습
(1) 5월 23일 무장대 50명이 고산리(KOSAN-NI, 917-1126)에서 경찰을 공격 했다. 무장대 3명이 사망했다. (미군정보고, B-2)
(2) 5월 19일 새벽 3시 무장대들이 도두리를 기습하여 여자 7명과 남자 3명을 납치해 갔다. 여자들 중 1명은 심하게 구타를 당하여 죽은 채로 유기됐고, 다른 4 명의 여자들은 피살된 것으로 보이나 이들의 시체를 찾지 못했다. (방첩대 정기보 고 제122호, C-3)
g. 제주도에서 경비대원 탈영
(1) 5월 21일 모슬포(925-1115)에 주둔하고 있던 경비대원 41명이 개인 병기와 장비, 그리고 실탄 5,600발을 가지고 탈영했다. 이들 중 11명은 하사관이었다.
5월 21일 새벽 4시 탈영병 30명이 대정지서(926-1120)를 공격하여 경찰 3명과 사환 1명을 살해하고, 지서장에게 부상을 입혀 납치해갔다. (방첩대 정기보고 제 122호, B-2)
(2) 제주도 주둔 경비대 제5연대에 속한 장교 3명이 탈영하여 5월 20일 오후 3 시 본토로 향하는 배에 오른 듯하다. 대대장을 무능하다는 이유로 해임한 것이 탈 영의 이유인 것으로 여겨진다. (국방경비대 보고)
h. 제주도에서 경비대 작전 5월 14일 오후 6시에서 5월 21일 오후 6시 사이에 경비대는 송당리(971-
1147)와 교래리(967-1142) 지역에서 동굴을 수색하는 등의 작전을 벌여 그 지역의 게릴라들을 검거하였다. 게릴라 7명이 죽고 200명이 체포되었다. (G-3 작전 보고 제23호, B-2)

1. ARMED FORCES
North Korean Constabularymen Attack Southern Police Box
Approximately 60 North Korean Constabularymen attacked the police box south of OP #33, (917-1694), at 220130 May.
The North Koreans, using two hand grenades and small arms, wounded one policeman and captured the police box. The NKC confiscated police clothes, personal property, 200 rounds of carbine ammunition, 400 rounds of Japanese rifle ammunition and burned the police box to the ground before returning to the north. 2. POLITICAL ACTIVITIES
Communist Education Pre-Requisites High
The SOUTH KOREA LABOR PARTY is recruiting students to attend the KIM Il Sung University in North KOREA. It is proposed that 350 South Korean students will attend the classes which began on 22 May. Entrance requirements include active participation in all past communist riots in South KOREA since
August 1946 and no "reactionary" relatives. (CIC S/I 22 May.

3. CIVIL UNREST
a. Communists Attack and Burn Telephone Exchange in YONGDUNGPO
At 230230 May the telephone exchange in YONGDUNGPO
(990-1630) was attacked by five communists wearing armbands of the Community Protective Corps. One policeman and two communication employees were killed, two policemen were seriously wounded and one policeman was severely burned. The exchange building was completely destroyed by fire. b. Rightists Terrorized in CHOLLA-NAMDO
(1) At 190100 May a mob attacked the home of a UNITED
YOUNG MIN'S PARTY member in SANG SA MYUN (1042-1323), killed the rightist, wounded one of his followers and burned the house.

(2) At 190100 May a mob attacked the home of the village leader in BUL RANG Myun (1042-1314), killed the leader, severely beat his wife and children and set fire to his home.

(3) At 190130 May a mob set fire to a home in CHO SUNG
Myun (1023-1311). When the police investigated they were fired on by the mob. Police returned the fire and killed one of the mobsters. (CIC P/R #122. Police Report)

Community Protective Corps member in SUNCHON (1034-1321).
The same mob later cut police and public telephone lines.

c. Police Capture Terrorists in CHOLLA-NAMDO
(1) At 180100 May the police of POSONG (1008-1304)
arrested 18 for election terrorism and recovered one U.S.
carbine. (CIC P/R #122. Police Report)
(2) On 18 May while attempting to apprehend a mob in CHO SANG Myun (1025-1308), the police killed one mobster, identified as a member of the SOUTH KOREA LABOR PARTY, and recovered one U.S. carbine. (CIC P/R #122. Police Report)
d. Rightists Attacked in KYONGSANG-PUKTO
(1) A mob of 40 attacked an election committee chairman in his home in YONG CHON (1190-1452) at 202200 May. The committee chairman died as a result of the beating administered by the mob. (Police Report)
(2) At 210300 May a citizen was beaten to death in
YONG CHON (1190-1452). (Police Report)
(3) The vice-chairman of the STUDENTS UNION in
TAEGU was severely beaten by four men at 202100 May. (Police
Report)
(4) A vice-chief of the Community Protective Corps in NAE YUNG Gun (1207-1536) was killed on 20 May by ten mobsters armed with spears. (Police Report)
e. Rightist's Home Attacked in CHOLLA-PUKTO (Delayed
Report)
Ten mobsters attacked the home of an election committeeman in MUJU Gun (1056-1427) on 15 May. No damage or casualties were reported. (CIC P/R #122. Police Report)
f. Villages Raided on CHEJU-DO
(1) On 23 May, 50 raiders attacked the police in
KOSAN NI (917-1126). Three of the raiders were killed.

(2) Raiders entered TOTO RI at 190300 May and kidnapped seven women and three men. One of the women was severely beaten and left for dead and four other women are believed killed, but their bodies have not been found.

g. Constabularymen Desert on CHEJU-DO
(1) On 21 May, 41 constabularymen from MOSUL PO
(925-1115) 11 of whom were non-commissioned officers, deserted with their weapons, equipment and 5600 rounds of ammunition. At 210400 May, 30 of these deserters attacked the police box at TAEJONG (926-1120), killed three policemen and one houseboy and wounded and kidnapped the police chief. (CIC P/R #122. B-2)
(2) Three officers of the 5th Korean Constabulary
Regiment on CHEJU-DO are believed to have deserted and boarded a ship to the mainland at 201700 May. The desertion

h. Constabulary Operations on CHEJU-DO
During the period 141800 May to 211800 May the Constabulary operated between SONG DANG NI (971-1147) and
KYORAE-RI (967-1142) searching caves and rounding up guerrilla forces in that area. Seven guerrillas were killed and 200 prisoners taken. (G-3 O/P #23. B-2)
i. Communications Severed in CHOLLA-NAMDO
Between 0100 hours and 0300 hours 19 May, one telephone pole on the electric power line between KWANGJU and
SUNCHON (1048-1327) was burned (G-3) and telephone lines were cut in four places near SUNCHON (Police Report). (CIC P/R

Korean Coast Guard investigated 313 vessels in Korean waters.

Koreans crossed the 38th parallel from North KOREA and entered camps at KAESONG (950-1690), UIJONGBU (1000-1660), CHUMUNJIN
