Subject: Visit of UNCOK to South Cholla Province The Embassy refers to its telegram No. 420, April 23, and has the honor to enclose for the Department's information copies of the following, with regard to the visit of the United Nations Commission on Korea to South Cholla Province: 1) Text of Press Release No. 10 dated April 21, 1949; 2) Information Circular No. 15/Add.1 dated April 22, 1949. The delegates of the Commission left Seoul on schedule by special train. They were accompanied by First Secretary GARDINER of this Embassy, as well as by Mr. CHANG Ki Yung, member of the Korean Liaison Committee to UNCOK, and by Mr. K. N. Press Release No. 10 April 21, 1949 For the purpose of observing general conditions, particularly in the areas affected by the recent disturbances, Sub-Committee II at its Fourteenth Meeting decided to take trips to Cheju Do and Cholla Namdo. The trip to Cheju Do was scheduled for April 18 to 21 and to Cholla Namdo for April 25 to 28. On the morning of April 18, 1949, the visiting group under the auspices of Sub-Committee II flew to Cheju Do, but because of bad weather conditions, it was not possible to land there. Subsequently the trip to Cheju Do was postponed until May. The observation group under the auspices of Sub-Committee II will leave by train for Cholla Namdo on April 21 and will visit Koo Rye, Soon Chun, Yo Soo, Kwang Ju and other towns in that province. Since the purpose of the trip is to observe general conditions in a number of specified areas, and because of the limit in time, the group will have to devote itself to its main purpose. Arrangements have been made for sleeping quarters and dining facilities on the train. The Sub-Committee appreciates the cooperation of the Korean Government in providing special train service and local transportation for visiting the areas abovementioned.
