Civil Unrest: (b) Deaths Mount: During the period 1 Jan to 26 Apr 350 persons were killed in South Korea. Current information indicates that the rate for violent deaths in April will be slightly higher than for February and March, but not alarmingly so. Among those killed in April, however, were at least seven known election officials and two candidates. This has caused considerable alarm among election officials and has caused the National Election Committee to bring the matter to the attention of the U.S. Military Governor. During the period 2 Apr - 26 Apr 51 deaths occurred on Cheju Island, including eight policemen, 15 rioters, and 26 nonrioters (Rightists).
