Section 6. CHEJU ISLAND 266 --- 14. Something unique in the field of women's rights that is the daily life of the Korean haenyeo on Cheju Island, a romantic spot off the southwestern coast of Korea. Here oranges grow and Amazonian women dive for rare shell-fish and seaweed. The role of Cheju's women is exactly opposite to the general pattern of Oriental customs. Here women are in the majority and control the men. While women of a healthy, athletic type of beauty dive, men fish from boats. According to ancient legend, there was a time when men were allowed on the island only for brief periods, and in small numbers, once a year. When boys reached adolescence, they were sent to the mainland. Today there still are more women than men on the island.
