No. 17 Period Covered: 16 August 1947 to 31 August 1947. 1. Sabotage and Espionage: (2). A report received from Cheju reveals that on the night of 2 Aug 1947, the telephone wires connecting the Military Government to the Infantry Post at Cheju Airport had been severed. Since the wires had been cut sharply and cleanly, possible sabotage of communications between Military Government and the Infantry seemed reasonable. On 4 July 1947, several men were arrested in Hado-Ri, Cheju District, while attempting to distribute handbills on Joint Commission propaganda. These handbills contained the usual Leftist propaganda about supporting the Joint Commission, putting into practice the decisions of the three ministers, the establishment of the peoples' economy along the spirit of the three ministers in North Korea, support of the Trusteeship, and the immediate revocation of the order of arrest of PAK, Hun Young, who is a friend of the people, a true and honest patriot. (5). Leftist Propaganda concerning Joint Commission. On the night of 5 August 1947, the following handbills were distributed throughout the city of Cheju. These handbills are similar to many such handbills which are being distributed throughout the whole of Cheju Do. 1. "May a Korea Independent country be established. May a Korean Interim Democratic Government be established, and may a Korean People's Government be established. God Bless the Democratic People's Front.". 2. "See Farmers, let us oppose the compulsory grain collection program by which murdering police will be distributed five hops of rice a day, and rascals, terrorist members of the Kwang Bok Youth Association will satisfy their stomachs. See Farmers, as there is as much as ly,000 suks of rice in the provincial Government, let us oppose the grain collection program at any cost." 3. "People demand that all of the property in Korea may be managed after we have our own democratic government. We people demand that Japanese houses may be sold after we have our own government because they are the most important part of the property. We send our earnest gratitude to the delegates of the United States and the USSR who struggle for Korean Independence at the Joint Commission. May Korean Republic be established.
