Korean Constabulary Headquarters reports that at approximately 1500 hours, 3 May 1949, a fire fight began in the vicinity of the 38° North Parallel, north and west of Kaesong (950.8-1690.8) Skirmishing continued until morning of 6 May 1949 at which time the situation was reported stabilized. Constabulary Headquarters further states 300-400 enemy killed. During this engagement Constabulary Headquarters reports their own casualties at 17 killed and 31 wounded. Casualties in other operations were; 6 killed or wounded and 6 captured in the Chiri-San area (1073-1375); 11 killed or wounded and 372 captured at Cheju-DO (915-1151). Comments: Based upon past experience and the tendency of the Korean Constabulary to exaggerate, this office estimates the enemy killed in the fire fight at Kaesong to be between 50 and 100. John S. Korean Constabulary Headquarters reports during the period 5 through 12 May 1949, 67 guerrillas killed or wounded and 42 captured in the Chiri-San area (1073-1375); 532 killed or wounded in the area adjacent to and south of the 38° North Parallel; and 2 killed or wounded and 47 captured at Cheju-Do (915-1151). Total for the period, 601 killed or wounded and 89 captured. Comment: The 532 killed or wounded in the area adjacent to and south of the 380 North Parallel include the figures reported by Korean Constabulary units for the action that took place north of and in the vicinity of Kaesong (950.8-1690.8) during 3 to 6 May 1949.
