Korean Army Operations Against Rebel Forces (1) Units of the Korean Army 2nd Regiment conducted a 30-hour operation against rebel forces in the vicinity of KOMUN AK (965-1157), CHEJU-DO, on 7-8 April, killing 18 of the guerrillas and capturing 15 prisoners. Four M-1 rifles, 1 Japanese 44 rifle and 23 Japanese 99 rifles were taken in the engagement. (-3) COMMENT: The arms captured in this operation and those taken in an engagement on 6 April (P/R #1099) aggregate nearly 25 per cent of the arms estimated to be in possession of rebel troops as of 1 April (P/R #1097). 2. CURRENT INTELLIGENCE a. President RHEE Visits CHEJU-DO President and Madam RHEE, accompanied by SHIN Sung Ko, Defense Minister, made an aerial visit to CHEJU-DO on 9 April and were welcomed by an estimated 150,000 of the island people. The Chief Executive, who spoke to a packed throng in the public square of CHEJU City and visited refugee camps in the area, suggested that mountain dwellers be welcomed back into the fold of loyal citizens and indicated that on 10 May elections would be held on the island for 2 unfilled Assembly seats. (B-1) COM-ENT: Two of the 3 Assembly seats alloted to CHEJU Island have been vacant since the 10 May 1948 election. At that time, because of communistic terrorism and disruption of voting activities, ballots in 2 of the electoral districts were invalidated.
